Hundreds of South African schools are in crisis, not because they lack dedicated educators, but because they lack the governance structures needed to thrive. By law, every school must have a School Governing Body (SGB) responsible for leadership and financial oversight. In many under-resourced communities, finding capable people to serve on the SGB is a constant struggle, leaving principals and teachers without the support they desperately need.
In partnership with the Nolands Foundation and The Principals Academy Trust (PAT), One Million Strong identifies schools ready for change and invites their principals, SGB members, and select teachers to join a transformative wilderness retreat, a unique experience that combines strategic visioning with genuine personal renewal.

This is not a typical training session. School leadership teams spend quality time in a retreat setting, working alongside facilitators to create a comprehensive three-year strategy tailored to their school’s unique needs. Time is also built in for reflection, walking in the mountains, and genuine human connection.
When the team returns to their school, PAT provides ongoing coaching to support them in implementing their strategy. This combination of visioning, planning, and sustained support creates the conditions for lasting institutional change.
